BIO

David Luther is a Kansas City-based music artist known for his soulful blend of Americana and indie-folk, blues-infused rock, and heartfelt singer-songwriter. Rooted in the rich musical landscape of the Midwest, Luther's music often explores themes of resilience, the search for connection, and the beauty of everyday life. With a warm and evocative voice, raw and powerful delivery, he crafts songs that resonate with sincerity and a deep sense of place. Having honed his craft in the Kansas City music community, David Luther recorded his first self-titled EP in 2009 with Nashville producer Neilson Hubbard. The EP featured backing vocals from Americana artist Garrison Starr.

In 2020, during the heart of COVID-19, David knew it was time to embrace becoming a full-time musician.. Stepping away from social work and side jobs, especially as a single father of two boys, was a faith move then. Shortly after, David worked with his sister Anna Taylor and producer Brandon Mashburn on the single I Will, released in 2023, a song to draw attention to things that unite rather than divide us. During this time David collaborated with David George and Pat Tomek on his EP Take Me Home, which was released in 2022. The EP included the anthem Home To Kansas City and World’s Gonna Change, a song co-written by David, Brandon Mashburn, and Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning songwriter Tom Whitlock. George and Tomek's dedication and artistry to the project, along with the exceptional musicians and singers has been inspiring.

In July 2024, David again joined Neilson Hubbard, along with Juan Solórzano and engineer Dylan Alldredge, in their East Nashville studio to record Who You Are. Released on April 25th, the album features partner Kelly Dougherty on “Wrecking Bay” and Garrison Starr on “If Love Just Ain't Enough.”  The songs on the LP are a journey of David’s songwriting, many coming from painful places in the past and leading up to the last song he finished the night before the last days of recording, the title track.

His genuine songwriting resonates deeply, and his performances forge a strong connection, solidifying his position as a compelling voice in the Americana music community.

What this album means to me...

I know it’s been said before, and I didn’t even know it was true until now, but this is the album I have always wanted to make. I wanted to do something that was more than just making music. Something that pulled from every part of me, required me to be vulnerable about the difficult places in my life and was an instrument that would help me grow, requiring a level of honesty that is sometimes uncomfortable, especially when I look back. The songs start from the times I remember being in the most pain as a person and as a father, times when I was just happy, even ignorantly happy, to now, where I wasn’t even able to finish the last song until I became willing to grow, to change, and let go. It’s a timeline from when I decided to start growing again, whatever that meant, and to not leave all of my pain and uncertainty to my children to figure out. To embrace the light that I can see dripping into darkness and let it burn through my bullshit, however long it takes. To hear and write and sing the songs burrowing their way out of my soul, reaching upward and outward, seeking resonance and service in the hearts of others. I don't think this kind of expression can be reached without digging deep into yourself and becoming willing to let go of what you think you know about yourself, others, and our world, as well as accept and embrace who you are. The songs are honest and real with hope that has never left me, even in the darkest puddles of the past. My hope is that these songs meet people where they are and help them push through, let go, or hold on to whatever is helping them move from one place in life to the next. To know they are not alone in their pain or in their triumph and at least make them smile about something. When asked what stands out to me in this project, it is the images, experiences, and feelings that the lyrics and melodies evoke in me and how they are met with the loving skill and inspired willingness of Neilson, Juan, and Dylan. The beautiful lack of ego that was present in true service to the songs by Kelly, Garrison, and James. It has and continues to require no less than everything I am, and I would not have it any other way. - David Luther
